A ticket from my rather rudimentary ticket collection - just struck me that 4 bob seems rather high even for 1938. Perhaps not, though.

How does it compare with your club?
I mean, it is Arsenal, so you've got to expect premium prices Smile

Surely, the ticket is for a Seat? It was 4/- at Leeds in the early/mid 1960s
for Terrace Standing.

Your example actually advises the holder to take their seat by 5.25pm.

1938 was pre-floodlights days hence the early evening kick off. We get early evening kick offs now to suit the TV companies.

Nice item of memorabilia though.

The princely sum of 11p (I think?) was charged to see Burnley play at Somerton Park in May 1947, just a week after they'd lost the FA Cup Final to Charlton Athletic.

It's unconfirmed, but I believe this was county's first ever "all-ticket" home match too.

The Div 2 season didn't finish until June that year, due to the original "Big Freeze."

Lovely Wiggy - however, you are too young to remember that 1s 6d = 7.5 new pence.

Thanks Pete, trying to decipher old money always confuses the life out of me.
I was only three when it all changed, but can still remember the 'Tanner' coin (6p?), which was still in circulation (albeit no longer being minted) when I was growing up.

I now understand why my old Nan completely failed to grasp decimalisation.
She'd wander around the shops with me as a kid in the 1970s muttering stuff like ... "I'm not paying two shillings for that I know" ... when it said 10p or something like on the sticker.

Laughing

I had the job of teaching my granddad (he was 83 in 1971) about de-kimalisation as he called it. I think I failed miserably.

Even now, when we pay £2 for a loaf from our bakers, it's hard not to think about paying 1s 6d for one in 1970 !!
