Boxing Day 88 years ago and a Midland Counties League fixture between a pre-league York City and Castleford Town at their old ground of Fulfordgate.

This was the return fixture as these sides had met 24 hours previously at Castleford.

8 page programme has plenty of interest to read, the editor's notes being quite critical of the team's performances that season. They were reigning champions but, by Xmas 1925, were lying in 14th place.

Of all the advertising in the programme, I just noticed that, unusually for the times, there are none for either tobacco or beer. A couple of bicycle shops advertising, though, so perhaps they were a healthy lot in York.

Pre-league Gillingham from 1948 and a bit of an oddity in that, despite being December 27th, it's stated as being "Boxing Day"

Gills were lying second in the table, two points behind leaders Worcester City, so this 2-0 win may have put them top.

8 page issue, the only reading (apart from lge tables, fixtures etc) being the club notes on page 3.

Ads include one from Billy Bragg - no. not the champagne socialist - this Billy Bragg is very proud of his bicycle showroom located next to "The Snack Bar", colloquially known as "the football fan's rendezvous" complete with mobile canteen.

Point of note - Frank Soo, ex-Stoke, playing left-half for Chelmsford following his transfer for "a substantial fee" from Luton Town.

Two days after hammering Everton 5-1 at the Baseball Ground, there was a repeat performance 67 years ago today in front of a crowd of 30,911.

Carter (2), Stamps (2) and Morrison for the Rams...Robinson replied for Sunderland.

Derby up to 10th, Sunderland down to 12th in the table.

8 page very basic programme. Half a page of club notes and an article entitled "The £ S D of Football" penned by W.Capel Kirby of the Sunday Empire newspaper.

A quite splendid 24 page issue from Dedham Old Boys for the visit of Royal London (Colchester) 23 years ago.

More statistics than many league programmes would include, along with a 3 page round-up of events in the Essex & Suffolk Border League, manager's notes and "Dizzy Dob's" ongoing Man of the Match competition.

Great value for 20p.

1961 and a visit to Victoria Road, Dagenham for a Corinthian League match Maidenhead won 2-0. Maidenhead won the title that season and Dagenham finished 5th (of 16). Eight page programme printed black on white with a familiar action scene on the cover.

Back in 1967 the league were able to work out reasonably short journeys. (unlike this year when we had to go all the way to bloody Rochdale) Rovers went to Reading and they charged 6d for this 12 page programme.

Apparently, if Boxing Day fell on a Sunday (which it did in 1948) the 27th was classed as Boxing Day.

24 years ago and an Anglian Combination Div.3 fixture between 7th placed Attleborough Town and Beccles Caxton, lying two places above them.

The 16 page programme has numerous match reports but omits a fixture list which would have been useful to include, I would have thought. Also omitted (or unavailable) was the visiting team's lineup.

The player profile is of the home side's substitute Dean Williams who names Arsenal and Liverpool as his two previous clubs. Bit of a comedown for him, then.

The programme is understandably heavy on advertising - one interesting ad from Wimpey Homes promoting 3 bedroom bungalows in rural Norfolk for £95,000. Cost a wee bit more than that now!

1927 and an Amateur Cup tie against Leytonstone which was abandoned with Maidenhead leading 2-0. The game was played the following Saturday and Leytonstone were victors by 3-1. Usual six page gatefold issue printed black on light brown paper, this one added to the collection courtesy of a Sports Programmes offers catalogue eight years ago.

64 years ago (1949) and a 1st Division fixture between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Blackpool.

A very good 12 page programme was issued, full of reading and information, with the only adverts being on the inside front and back covers and the outside back cover.

Wolves won 1-0 in front of over 51,000 spectators.

58 years ago and to The Shay for a 3rd Division (North) match between 15th-placed Halifax Town and 3rd-placed Derby.

9,596 in attendance to watch a 2-2 draw.

12 page programme on sale for 3d. Mostly advertising other than club notes and a small article on the visiting team. Surprisingly, of the 26 ads in the programme, not one is for beer.

Very un-Yorkshirelike!
